Pelosi commented on the situation after the midterm elections
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that it is too early to say whether she will seek to retain her leadership position because it is still unclear which party will control the chamber in Tuesday’s election.
In two TV interviews, Pelosi said her party will have a “much brighter future” in the next Congress, given the more modest-than-expected Republican results in the election.
Democrats retained control of the Senate in the Nov. 8 election, which is seen as a victory for President Joe Biden. Who will gain control of the House of Representatives is still unclear, as no party has yet won 218 seats while the vote count continues.
“We haven’t given up,” Pelosi said, speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” program.
“They haven’t won yet,” she added, speaking on CNN.
Pelosi herself was elected to the House of Representatives for the 19th time on Tuesday, receiving more than 83 percent of the vote.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said he plans to seek the speaker’s seat if his party gains control of the next Congress, which begins work in January.
President Biden said he had spoken with McCarthy. He expressed hope, however, that the Democrats would win.
