Liz Cheney considers running for president in 2024

Elizabeth Cheney, one of only two Republican representatives on the Jan. 6 Committee of Inquiry, lost the day before in the Wyoming primary for the right to fight for a congressional seat this November. The winner in the primary was Harriet Hudgeman, with 66% of the vote compared to Cheney’s roughly 29%.

The defeat of the incumbent congresswoman from Wyoming was hardly a big surprise to political observers, who had predicted a very difficult election race for the daughter of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, and one of Donald Trump’s most vocal opponents. Once a Republican Party board member and three-term congresswoman, Cheney faced a wave of criticism from her colleagues after deciding to join the Committee of Inquiry on January 6, 2021, when a crowd of Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Presidential Election Certification Day. The former president in doing so became Cheney’s chief opponent and, as many observers believe, the architect of her defeat.

Cheney, in her speech after the results of the primary were released, promised to continue to do everything possible to prevent the former president from returning to the White House.

“We have to see very clearly the threat we face and what needs to be done to deal with it. I have said since January sixth that I would do everything in my power to ensure that Donald Trump is never anywhere near the Oval Office again – and I still say that!” – Cheney noted.

Cheney was more specific about what she was talking about in an interview with NBC, saying that she was thinking about entering the 2024 presidential race. And while the incumbent congresswoman is planning, Harriett Hudgeman ahead of her is celebrating her victory. Addressing supporters, she thanked Donald Trump for his support, as well as a number of Republicans in Congress, including many supporters of the former president.

“Wyoming said its word today. Wyoming said it on behalf of all the people of this great country who believe in the American dream. Who believe in freedom and recognize that our rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equal protection and the right to due process come from God. They don’t come from the government, and the government can’t take them away,” Hudgman said.

According to observers, the result in Wyoming’s intra-party election is another confirmation of the influence the former White House leader retains in the party. Of the 10 Republican members of the House of Representatives who voted to impeach the former president, only two have been able to win primaries in the current election cycle. The midterm elections in the United States will be held on November 8. And according to most of the opinion polls, the expected results are that Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives. In recent months, however, the situation for the Democrats has improved somewhat. According to experts, among other things, this was due to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision, which overturned the right to abortion at the federal level. This, in turn, has led to increased support for Democrats opposing such restrictions. Other victories for Joe Biden’s party include the passage of a sweeping anti-inflation bill and positive signals from the economy in recent weeks, from lower gasoline prices to stabilizing the pace of consumer price increases.

“The price of gasoline is really coming down – I’m not prepared to give anyone any credit for that, it’s outside the sphere of influence of the president of the United States or the Republicans in Congress, but it’s helping Joe Biden. What’s happening now in general is making the race more competitive. And if you had to bet, you could bet on the Republicans getting a majority in the House of Representatives. As for the Senate, it’s really a level playing field so far,” political commentator Lincoln Mitchell told the Voice of America.

In November, Americans will elect 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 senators. The midterm elections in the U.S. come two years after the presidential election and are considered the first electoral test for the current head of the White House.
