Kevin McCarthy accused Biden of inaction on the national debt situation

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has accused President Joe Biden and his administration of not working to resolve the national debt situation and possible default.

McCarthy noted that Republicans in the House have passed a “responsible bill” that “raises the debt ceiling, helps avoid default and combats reckless spending.”

“At the same time, President Biden has refused to do his job, threatening to lead our country into its first-ever default, and time is running out. After three months of inaction by the Biden administration, the House of Representatives has acted, and a bill is now in the Senate that would push back the risk of default. The Senate and the president must get to work — and as soon as possible,” the statement said.

McCarthy was thus responding to a letter from U.S. Treasury Secretary Jeannette Yellen. The head of the department warned that U.S. authorities could exhaust the emergency measures in connection with the state debt ceiling as early as June 1, which could eventually lead to default.

The White House press service reported that Biden had a telephone conversation with McCarthy, who now leads a bipartisan congressional delegation to Israel, and invited him to a meeting at the White House on May 9.
