In Qatar to build a stadium of a thousand shipping containers for Football World Cup 2022

Fenwick Iribarren Architects (Spain) designed an unusual collapsible stadium for the Football World Cup 2022 in Qatar, called “Stadium 974”. It is very conveniently located in close proximity to the coast, the seaport and the airport. The main feature of the construction is that most of the structure is 974 shipping containers.

The original name of this stadium, located in Doha, the capital of the Football World Cup 2022, was Ras Abu Aboud. The soccer arena has a capacity of 40,000 spectators. It consists of a steel frame that flows seamlessly into the roof, and the containers will house seating, various stands, toilets and other service facilities. Most of the containers were previously used for transportation of construction materials.

After the World Cup the stadium will be dismantled and, if necessary, rebuilt somewhere else, and its individual parts will be scrapped. However, there is a fear that metal containers will be very hot (do not forget that we are talking about Qatar, a country with a very hot climate), but Fenwick Iribarren Architects reassure: local sea breeze will quite cope with this problem.
