Hollywood movie studios agreed to protect directors from AI and improve their working conditions

Directors Guild of America (DGA) – one of the largest unions in Hollywood – has reached an agreement with movie studios to conclude a new labor contract, which will improve the working conditions of directors, guarantee higher wages and protection against artificial intelligence.

According to a new three-year contract between the DGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which is negotiating on behalf of the studios, directors will get a 5% pay raise in the first year, 4% in the second and 3.5% in the third. In favor of the directors changed the system of payment of royalties for the placement of their works on streaming services. Filmmakers have also received assurances that studios will not try to replace them with artificial intelligence.

In Hollywood, meanwhile, there has been a strike by writers united in the Writers Guild of America since May 2. Screenwriters urged colleagues in the film industry to support them. Against this background, the Directors Guild of America began May 10 negotiations with the studios for a new labor contract, but did not join the strike.

The largest unions in Hollywood are the Directors Guild, the Writers Guild and the Actors Guild. So far only the screenwriters are on strike. A strike by all three major unions could completely paralyze the studios. Thanks to an agreement reached with the directors, such a scenario has been avoided. On Wednesday, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers begins negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild, which is also preparing to go on strike. The Screenwriters Guild has already said that it intends to “continue the struggle.
