For the first time in 20 years, cases of domestic malaria have been reported in the U.S.

For the first time in 20 years, health officials have recorded cases of malaria infection inside the country. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that a total of five cases have been reported – four in Florida and one in Texas.

“In Florida, four cases of infection were reported in close proximity to each other. One case was reported in Texas,” the report said. – No cases of locally transmitted mosquito-borne malaria have been reported since 2003.”

Local authorities are calling for increased surveillance for possible new cases, as well as quick access to malaria medications if needed.
