Democrat Kathy Hobbs wins Arizona gubernatorial election

Democrat Katie Hobbs was elected governor of Arizona, defeating an ally of Donald Trump who claimed that the 2020 presidential election was rigged and refuses to acknowledge the results of the current campaign.

Hobbs received 50.4 percent of the vote. Her opponent, Cary Lake, lagged behind with 49.6 percent.

Hobbs, who is Arizona’s secretary of state, has gained notoriety as a staunch defender of the legitimacy of past elections. She warned that her Republican rival, former TV news anchor Lake, would be an agent of chaos.

Hobbs would replace Republican Governor Douglas Ducey, who by law could not run again.

She will be the first elected Democrat to serve as governor of Arizona since Janet Napolitano was elected to the position in 2006.
