China imposed sanctions on Pelosi

China announced sanctions against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over her visit to Taiwan earlier this week without disclosing their nature.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Friday that Pelosi ignored China’s concerns and strong opposition to her visit to the self-governing island claimed by Beijing.

Pelosi became the highest-ranking U.S. representative to visit Taiwan in 25 years.

Earlier, Chinese authorities summoned U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Burns to protest Pelosi’s visit.

The speaker left Taiwan on Wednesday after meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen and several public events.

She then traveled to South Korea and then to Japan. Both countries host U.S. military bases and could be drawn into a conflict involving Taiwan.
