Biden's supporters disapprove of fund to protect his son Hunter

Washington, May 5.

Supporters of U.S. President Joe Biden disapprove of plans by his son Hunter’s team to create a special fund to funnel money there to pay his debts to a team of lawyers who are defending him in lawsuits.

In December, Hunter Biden hired high-priced attorney Abby Lowell. The president’s son was unhappy with the insufficiently decisive approach taken by his previous lawyer. Biden Jr.’s team is now close to establishing a formal defense fund and plans to engage ethics counsel, but no final decision has been made, sources told the publication. High-ranking members of the Democratic Party are worried about the idea that the president’s son will “ask for money to pay for his legal problems.”

The debt for legal services amounts to several million dollars, and it is possible that the amount will grow. As the newspaper explained, some politicians have resorted to the help of such funds when they need the legal protection of highly paid lawyers, but it is often difficult to disclose information about such funds, which can raise questions about who makes donations and whether the origin of funds is legal. Thus, the initiative could provoke new investigations into Hunter Biden.

“For this fund to work, it would have to be extremely transparent and even have a number of restrictions, such as prohibiting donations to foreign nationals and registered lobbyists. Without these types of restrictions, the fund will become a headache for the White House,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Kohli, who previously served as senior counsel to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, explained in a conversation with the portal.
