Biden's decision to send 1,500 troops to the border drew criticism from lawmakers
Washington, May 4.
The decision by U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration to send 1,500 U.S. troops to the border with Mexico for 90 days in light of an expected influx of migrants has drawn criticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers.
“The Biden administration’s militarization of the border is unacceptable. There is already a humanitarian crisis in the Western Hemisphere, and the deployment of military personnel only signals that migrants pose a threat. Nothing could be further from the truth,” the network quotes Bob Menendez (Democrat of New Jersey), chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, as saying. House Member Ilhan Omar (Democrat-Minnesota) said Biden’s policies would negatively affect “innocent people who have committed no crime, they have only dared to seek a better life in the United States”.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (Republican) also expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s actions. “This decision will not stop illegal migration in any way,” the governor said.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of the USA which includes Border Patrol and Customs Control Service earlier stated that they have asked the Pentagon to send 1,500 servicemen to the border with Mexico for 90 days. The agency noted that there are already 2,500 U.S. National Guard troops on the border.
The DHS said it expects an increase in the number of migrants coming into the country because of the relaxation of several restrictions that were previously imposed in the country because of the pandemic. The Pentagon said it approved the request.
