Biden pledged to work with Republicans on behalf of all Americans

President Joe Biden vowed Wednesday to work together with Republicans and Democrats for America’s future, noting that yesterday’s midterm elections were “a good day for democracy.”

The president spoke to reporters Wednesday after the Democratic Party, which he leads, appeared to be able to partially overcome political obstacles in the midterm elections, preventing a convincing Republican victory, though his presidency is likely to enter a new period in which parts of the legislative branch will be under the control of a rival party.

President Joe Biden began his remarks by calling Tuesday’s midterm elections “a good day for democracy” and “a good day for America.” He added that he was ready to work together with Republican politicians elected to Congress.

Biden also expressed hope that Democrats and Republicans can continue a bipartisan approach to confronting Russian aggression in Ukraine. The president said he would invite members of both parties to the White House to discuss the issue after he returns from his trip to North Africa and Asia.

“The American people have spoken, and it shows that democracy is who we are,” the president said. He added that the election went “with little or no interference at all.”

Acknowledging that not all the results of the vote are in yet, Biden went on to discuss the results that are known at this point.

“Although the press and pundits predicted a giant red wave, it hasn’t happened,” he said. – “I know you were somewhat annoyed by my obsessive optimism, but I was in high spirits throughout the process.

Biden said any loss of a congressional seat by his party is painful. But he noted that the Democratic Party “lost fewer House seats this year than in any first midterm election for Democratic presidents in 40 years.”

The results of this past election were not a rout for Democrats, as many observers had feared. Instead, Republicans failed to produce a so-called “red wave,” which caused Democrats, including those in the White House, to experience enthusiasm after the political capabilities of the incumbent were questioned on the eve of the election.

“We challenged historical trends,” a senior Biden adviser told CNN. – “It’s pretty unusual when you think about it.

The results seem more likely to cause a reassessment of values among Republicans than Democrats, as former President Donald Trump hints at an imminent announcement of his candidacy for the election in 2024. Many of the candidates Trump endorsed before the election have lost or cannot yet declare victory because of the ongoing vote count.

Nevertheless, Biden and his team will have two difficult years in office if Republicans gain control of the House of Representatives. The president’s agenda without a Democratic majority in the lower house of Congress is likely to be trimmed. In addition, Republicans are going to investigate the actions of administration officials and Biden’s family.

Exit polls also showed continued voter dissatisfaction with the nation’s economic condition. About three-quarters of voters nationwide said they were dissatisfied with the economic situation. A similar number of Americans are struggling because of high inflation. About two-thirds said gasoline prices make them uncomfortable.

Voters are also gloomy about the direction the country is headed, with more than 7 in every 10 polled saying they were dissatisfied or annoyed.

For much of the campaign, Biden focused on economic issues, including areas in which he has enacted spending cuts. But the president has drawn criticism, including from some Democrats, for expanding his final message to include abortion rights and Democratic protections.

In the end, Biden is likely to avoid accusations of campaign failure. Even with the loss in the House, this year’s results are among the best for the ruling party in recent memory.

By comparison, the Democrats lost 54 seats in 1994 when President Bill Clinton was in power. And in the first midterm election during Barack Obama’s presidency, the Democratic Party lost 63 seats in the lower house of Congress.

It’s still unclear whether the election results will affect Biden’s decision to run for a second term. The president has said he intends to run again in 2024, and members of his team have begun preliminary preparations before making a final decision.
