Biden declared a state of emergency in Mississippi

On Sunday, President Joe Biden approved the declaration of a state of emergency in Mississippi after a powerful hurricane killed at least 26 people in the state.

One person died in the state of Alabama.

Biden ordered federal aid to supplement state and local efforts to rebuild affected areas, the White House said in a statement.

Funding will be provided to affected residents of Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe and Sharkey counties, according to the document.

Powerful tornadoes in Mississippi destroyed dozens of buildings. The effects of the disaster were particularly devastating in the town of Rolling Fork.

The small town of Silver City, like Rolling Fork, reported severe damage, and the cities of Winona and Amory were also affected.
