Biden administration may take action to regulate AI systems

NEW YORK, April 11.

The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is considering regulating artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems such as the ChatGPT chatbot.

United States authorities fear the potential use of AI to commit crimes and spread false information. As a first step, the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration sent a formal public inquiry Tuesday about so-called “accountability measures,” including whether potentially dangerous new AI models should be certified before they go to market.

“It’s amazing what these technologies are capable of even in their infancy,” said agency head Alan Davidson. – “We know that a number of restrictions need to be put in place to make sure they are used responsibly. He said proposals to regulate AI will be accepted over the next 60 days. Based on them, the department will make recommendations for U.S. officials on how to approach this type of technology.

Last week, Biden met with representatives of the White House Council of Science and Technology Advisers. Asked whether artificial intelligence poses a danger, he said, “That remains to be seen. Maybe.”

The U.S. company OpenAI’s ChatGPT was launched in late 2022. The service interacts with the user in conversational mode. The chatbot can answer additional questions, acknowledge its mistakes, challenge incorrect assumptions and reject inappropriate requests. The service’s capabilities have attracted a great deal of public attention. The novelty was criticized after it was used by students around the world to take exams and prepare academic papers.
