A bridge collapsed in Pennsylvania

A highway bridge has collapsed in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the local Department of Public Safety said Friday.

“Please avoid the area where the bridge collapse has been confirmed. Firefighters, paramedics and police are on the scene. No injuries have been reported at this time. There is a strong smell of gas in the area,” the department said in a post on its official Twitter page.

Local authorities are said to have contacted the Red Cross to help possible survivors.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki reported in this regard that U.S. President Joe Biden is aware of the incident.

“The President of the United States has been made aware of the bridge collapse in Pittsburgh. Our team is in contact with state and local authorities on the ground and they continue to gather information on the causes of the collapse,” Psaki wrote on Twitter. She added that Biden’s scheduled visit to Pennsylvania on Friday is still on track.
