The skull of a giant sea creature has been discovered on the coast of California.
The remains “probably belong to either a fin whale or a blue whale”, two endangered species of marine mammals, according to experts at the American Museum of Natural History in Santa Cruz.
They are among the largest animals in the world, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Fin whales and blue whales are gigantic and very similar, and “their skulls are measured in metres, not centimetres,” said Robert Bossenecker, a paleontologist at the College of Charleston.
He added that such a case – a phenomenon “not very common, but not unprecedented”.
