The UK may be granted a short-term extension for exit from the EU, this issue will be actively discussed during the beginning of the EU Council on Thursday, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaking in the Bundestag.
“We can speak about the short-term extension in a positive way” Merkel said, adding that the EU leaders will actively discuss this issue on Thursday, a condition for such a decision could be a “positive vote of the British parliament”, as well as compliance with the election results in the European Parliament, which will be held in May.
Merkel, referring to the agreement between the UK and the EU on Brexit, said that she personally continues to strive for an organized exit, which is “not only in the interests of the UK, but also in Germany, and all 27 EU member states.”
She added that regardless of the decision from the part of the British to withdraw from the EU, “we strive for good and close relations” in the future, in particular in matters of “foreign and domestic policy, cooperation in NATO and the UN.”
“The doors on our side remain open,” Merkel said.
The Parliament of the United Kingdom last week adopted a resolution on which the Brexit deadline could be postponed from March 29 to June 30, if this week the House of Commons approves the text made by Theresa May.
