In New York City, the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks are being remembered

A ceremony in memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, during which relatives of the victims read out their names, is held in New York at the memorial complex at the site of the Twin Towers.

US Vice President Kamala Harris participates in the ceremony, as last year. In 2021, on the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, US President Joe Biden came to New York, but this year he is taking part in memorial events in Alaska. Republican US presidential contender Ron Desantis, former US President Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams are also attending the ceremony.

The ceremony typically takes about three hours and is punctuated by several moments of silence timed to commemorate the major milestones of the events of Sept. 11, 2021 – the moments when the first plane hit the World Trade Center tower, when a second plane hit another tower, when a plane hit the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C., and when a fourth plane fell in Pennsylvania. This year’s name-reading ceremony involves young people, some of whom were born after the Sept. 11 attacks and do not themselves remember the events of that day. In this way, the organizers are trying to ensure continuity in preserving the memory of the events of that day.

In New York on the anniversary of the tragedy, increased security measures were taken. Part of the streets in the south of Manhattan, where the memorial complex is located, is closed. Police are on duty at subway exits.

In the evening in the city will be held an action called Tribute in Light. Two columns of light symbolizing the twin towers of the World Trade Center destroyed by terrorists will rise into the sky. The action has been held since 2002.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists from the Al-Qaeda group hijacked four passenger airliners in the United States. They aimed two of them at the World Trade Center towers, the tallest buildings in New York City at the time, and the third at the Pentagon building in the Washington suburbs. A fourth plane was also headed toward the American capital, but crashed near the town of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The terrorist attacks killed 2,977 people.
