The movie “Barbie” became the most successful box office debut by a female director in movie history
The movie “Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig collected a record $155 million in the first weekend of distribution. As a result, the film became the highest-grossing debut of a female director in the history of cinema.
The leader in this category so far was considered to have earned $153 million film “Captain Marvel”, which was directed by the duo of directors – Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck in 2019. Before that, the record belonged to the film “Wonder Woman” directed by Patty Jenkins, which for the first weekend of the show in 2017 earned $103 million.
It is noted that the budget of “Barbie” amounted to $145 million, excluding marketing expenses. Warner Bros. does not disclose data on the amount of marketing costs, however, according to the publication, their amount may reach $150 million. The picture was the result of a partnership between the film studio Warner Bros. and the American toy manufacturer Mattel, which produces dolls “Barbie”.
Comedy “Barbie” gained popularity long before its release due to a large-scale campaign to promote the movie. It involved major clothing and cosmetics brands, social networks and many bloggers.
Gerwig gained recognition as a director thanks to the autobiographical film “Lady Bird” in 2017 and the adaptation of Louisa May Olcott’s novel “Little Women”, released in 2019. Both films received numerous Academy Award nominations.
