U.S. drone that fell in the Black Sea flew from a base in Romania

The American MQ-9 Reaper drone, which fell in the Black Sea after a collision with a Russian fighter jet, flew from a base in Romania and was performing routine reconnaissance. The drone could carry Hellfire missiles, but it was not equipped with them.

The drone was on a reconnaissance mission about 75 miles southwest of annexed Crimea. There it was intercepted by two Russian warplanes.

The CBS television channel simulated the drone’s downfall and aired the clip. The footage shows a fighter jet approaching the vehicle from below and then dropping fuel on it. The Russian plane then flew upwards and caught the propeller of the drone. The MQ-9 Reaper flipped several times and began to fall.

U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in an interview with CNN that Washington does not want anyone but Americans to receive the wreckage of the vehicle.

The United States has taken measures to protect its property, Kirby noted.
