Cindy McCain confirmed as director of UN World Food Program

Cindy McCain, widow of Senator John McCain, has been confirmed as the new executive director of the UN World Food Program (WFP). The decision was made at the WFP Executive Board meeting in Rome on the proposal of the UN Secretary General and the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

“The Executive Board had no objection to the candidacy of Cindy McCain,” said WFP Executive Board Chairman and Polish Permanent Representative to international organizations in Rome, Artur Pollock.

McCain will succeed his compatriot David Beasley, whose term ends April 4. He has led WFP since 2017, and under him the UN body won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The World Food Program is governed by an Executive Board of 36 nations. The organization’s Executive Director is appointed for 5 years and is responsible for administrative matters as well as the implementation of its programs, projects and other activities.
