U.S. condemns attempt to undermine democracy in Brazil
President Joe Biden on Sunday called the situation in Brazil outrageous. Earlier Jake Sullivan, the president’s national security adviser, said that the U.S. condemns any attempts to undermine democracy in Brazil and that the president is closely monitoring the situation in that country.
As a reminder, supporters of the former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday stormed the buildings of the supreme court and the congress of the country and surrounded the presidential palace in Brasilia.
Television showed several thousand protesters storming the buildings and starting to break furniture. According to media estimates, about 3,000 people participated in the rally.
Many protesters are challenging the results of the October 30 elections in which leftist leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated rightist leader Bolsonaro.
The former president has repeatedly questioned the reliability of the country’s electronic voting system without evidence, and many of his supporters share his view.
Bolsonaro left Brazil for Florida 48 hours before his mandate expired.
Lula was in the city of Sao Paulo this weekend, touring the country.
