Twitter users spoke out in favor of Ilon Musk's resignation
Twitter users have spoken out strongly in favor of Ilon Musk stepping down as head of the platform, a reaction to the billionaire’s erratic and sometimes controversial actions in his less than two months in office.
Musk promised Sunday that he would submit to the results of the poll, but did not say exactly when he would step down, if members demanded it. There is no successor to the position yet, he said.
About 57.5 percent of participants supported Musk stepping down as Twitter’s head, while 42.5 percent voted against it, the poll, which began Sunday night, showed. More than 17.5 million people took part in the vote.
The poll was the end of a tumultuous week during which Twitter’s privacy policy was changed and a number of journalists’ accounts were blocked and unblocked, drawing condemnation from news organizations, human rights groups and officials in Europe.
Twitter blocked accounts whose authors promoted competing social networks, including Facebook or Instagram, in their posts, raising questions even from longtime Musk supporters, including Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.
Musk said he would put all Twitter policy changes to a vote through public polls, which raised new questions about his management style and active involvement in the company. Some Tesla investors have begun to express concern that he is shifting his focus at a critical time for the electric car maker.
In November, Musk said he would reduce the amount of time he devotes to Twitter and eventually find a candidate to become CEO of the social network. The billionaire has not yet commented on the vote. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.
Twitter is now conducting a poll on the feasibility of a policy preventing accounts that promote other social networks.
