The U.S. has made a breakthrough in thermonuclear power
The largest scientific success was officially announced in the U.S.: for the first time a fusion reaction produced more energy than it took to conduct it.
The U.S. Department of Energy reported that scientists from the Livermore National Laboratory in California achieved this success. “This theoretically makes possible fundamental breakthroughs in national defense and clean energy,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm
She added that this is one of the remarkable scientific achievements of the 21st century that will remain in the history books.
White House science adviser Arati Prabhakar noted, calling the results of the experiment “an incredible diamond of engineering.”
Advocates of fusion development believe it could provide mankind with endless amounts of energy, eliminating the need to use fossil fuels and traditional energy resources.
Kim Badil, director of the Livermore Laboratory, said this success could lead to the technology being put to practical use in a few decades, rather than the 50-60 years previously thought.
U.S. President Joe Biden called this success an example of the importance of investing in scientific research.
